A new lumbar assist seating system developed for underground mine personnel operating loaders and haul trucks has resulted in reduced injuries and fatigue.

Perth-based Modern Motor Trimmers (MMT), which specializes in suspension seats and seating products for the mining industry, spent over five years enhancing the pneumatically-operated twin air lumbar support.

The two-stage lumbar system is integrated into the backrest of an ISRI premium-quality T-backed seat. It uses the air supply from the seat's built-in air compressor or the machine's air supply to fully pump up, supporting the operator's lumbar region and generating a buffer against shock and jarring.

MMT is setting up the lumbar system to the premium quality ISRI 150kg-rated seating range, currently the only product on the market to have an adjustable back rest which can be angled for higher operator comfort and support.

Garry Spouge, Managing Director who founded MMT in 1992, said the company had improved and started to furnish the innovative seating product in ISRI seats in the last 12 months, as demand for safer and more comfortable seating technology in the underground mining sector had started.

"Safety is the primary priority for all mining firms around The outback, and that obviously includes employee safety and comfort, which was the starting point for us when it comes to developing this lumbar support system," Mr Spouge said.

"Sore and uncertain backs are the most common reasons for lost time injuries in the workplace, and our lower back help targets the lumbar region, avoiding back injuries and ultimately on-the-job stress."

Mr Spouge stated that MMT had previously researched and manufactured a similar

T backrest for underground mining equipment, but the prototype did not have an adjustable lumbar support.

"We developed the first prototype in the mid 1990's, but the patented system we're currently using is fitted to an ISRI seat which has built-in adjustable suspension dampening to slow the seat suspension down, while a seat isolator reduces the forward and back jarring," he said.

"This seat was also selected as it's the only one in production to our skills that reclines. Other manufactures have tried to initiate the 'T' back rests, but their seats are non-reclining and this causes an issue when operators need to modify it for comfort

"We're really grateful with our newest design, and already the feedback we've gained has been extremely good, and in particular, that it's eliminating accidental injuries and weariness."

Mr Spouge says that as well as increasing operator comfort and safety, the lumbar support also helps to improve seat life by eliminating wear and tear and promoting correct pose.

"Consequently, the benefits are substantial, both for the operator and also the employer," he added.

MMT's core market niche is the supply, setting up and maintenance of premium suspension seats and also seating products to the WA mining, building, construction, engineering and transport sectors.
